Multiplication Tables Check
In Year 4, pupils complete the statutory Multiplication Tables Check (MTC), which assesses their fluency in multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. At The Laurels, we recognise that rapid recall of multiplication and division facts underpins success across the maths curriculum, supporting efficiency in calculation, reasoning and problem-solving.
To secure this essential knowledge, pupils take part in regular, engaging practice through tools such as Times Table Rockstars and Hit the Button, alongside daily oral and written fluency sessions. This consistent approach helps pupils to build both accuracy and automaticity, enabling them to retrieve facts quickly and apply them flexibly in more complex mathematical contexts.
We work closely with parents to strengthen learning beyond the classroom, encouraging short, focused practice at home to reinforce classroom teaching. As a result, pupils develop confidence, speed and resilience — equipping them not only to succeed in the MTC but also to approach future mathematical challenges with secure foundations and enthusiasm.
